Free Archaeology Fun Day

Date: Saturday, October 4, 2014
10:00am - 5:00pm

MONTAUK, NY – The Montauk Historical Society will sponsor its third annual Archaeology Fest on the grounds of the Montauk's Second House Museum, on Montauk Highway at Second House Road. Funding is being provided by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities. The event is suitable for people of all ages and everyone is invited. Last year's Archaeology Fest drew a crowd of close to 700.

The Archaeology Fest is designed to raise community awareness about and support for a second museum on the site, still in the planning stages, which will celebrate and explore Montauk's rich archeological and natural history. “What a day it will be when the museum is a reality,” says Dick Cavett, longtime Montauk resident and museum supporter. “This is a great project, long overdue.”

The Fest will reflect the sorts of hands-on demonstrations and displays that will be the core of the new museum's educational programs.

The Archaeology Fest will run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and it promises to entertain, inform and delight visitors with topics such as “friction fire,” “flintknapping,” “bow and arrow making,” and more. Early cooking techniques will be demonstrated using local produce and shellfish.

“Every schoolchild knows that native peoples were expert huntergatherers,” says Dr. Maria-Louise Sidoroff, Archeological Consultant to the museum committee, “but as our technological world advances, it becomes more and more difficult for people to imagine what life was like in a pre-high-tech age. The Archaeology Fest will allow experts to demonstrate skills of prehistoric life that enabled early cultures to survive.”

In addition to the demonstrations, there will be brief talks by world-known archeologists and historians.

Delicious, family-friendly food and beverages will be available from Auntie Dorine's Clam Bar. Unique items from participating archeologists' personal collections will comprise an exciting raffle.

Please visit our Facebook Page for more details.
